With the huge success of our later model 911 (996/997) kits, and continued engine failures in the 911s and Boxsters, Renegade now offers a GM LS series V-8 kit for the 986 Boxster S. Arguably one of the best handling cars ever built, the Boxster S has always been very impressive in almost every way. Without diminishing any of the celebrated attributes of the Boxster, Renegade has developed a kit to install the all-aluminum LS series V-8, adding greater reliability and power, without sacrifice.
Critics, Purists and Enthusiasts agree, the Renegade Hybrids 986 Boxster S V-8 conversion just makes perfect sense. Why? Let's look at the facts together:
The flat-6 engine from the Boxster S, and an LS series all aluminum V-8, weigh almost the same. The Boxster S produced horsepower in the mid 200's, yet a new, entry-level GM LS-3 engine, starts in the mid 400's which is higher horse power than a twin turbo! The twin-turbo factory engine weighs 200lbs. more than the LS and costs 3 times as much! The stock cooling system found in the Boxster S will support the V-8 using our conversion kit! The stock fuel system found in the Boxster S will support the V-8 using our conversion parts! The stock 6 speed transaxle will handle the LS V-8 torque up to 500HP with minimal abuse. The gauges can be converted to work with your V-8. The power steering is converted to electric much like the Porsche models sold today. $19 oil changes and there is ample room to service the engine! Smog legal options are available for these engines while still providing enhanced performance and much greater reliability!
While it is very tempting to purchase a Base Boxster for just a few thousand bucks, there are several reasons why we designed the kit for the much more formidable Boxster S. Transaxle strength, design, and ratios were the first concern. Insufficient safety related equipment such as the brakes, and undersized support systems like the cooling system and CV axles, certainly played the part as well. Yes, we have installed the V-8 kit in a Base Boxster, we had to change so many things to the "S" equivalent, it was apparent that buying the Boxster S for a few bucks more was, by far, the best choice.
When installing the V-8, there are some modifications to the fire wall. This will likely reduce your seat travel by just one click. However, aftermarket performance seats are often thinner in the back to reduce weight and improve torso stability. You will not likely need that last 1/2 inch after you install better seats.
